inaugural ball gown of Michelle Obama

All well known fashion designers fought to dress America's new first lady Michelle Obama for this special day. It was such a big challenge like the Project Runway and everyone was waiting to see who would win the competition. Here is the winner : Jason Wu.

This is actually not the first time for Wu to dress Obama. He was only 26, when Obama appeared on a Barbara Walters TV interview wearing an adaptation of a silk sheath dress from his spring 2009 collection. Eminently feminine, the hand-embroidered dress was a confident departure from the relatively matronly skirt suits of Oscar de la Renta and other tried-and-true design houses that have epitomized first lady attire for years. “There’s no muss, no fuss,” Wu explains of the dress. “It worked because she’s not ornate. She’s fresh. But beyond that, I think she’s made an even bigger statement by wearing brands that are more budget-conscious, like J. Crew.” (via http://www.advocate.com/)

Wu launched his women’s label three years ago. Surely, we will be hearing about him and his collections more and more in the future. This big success for such a young designer would probably make other designers too much jealous, too.
