Vivienne Westwood’s spring/summer 2009 menswear Milan show has sparked controversy and debate due to the designer’s decision to cast Roma gypsies as catwalk models. Yes, you heard it right. Real gypsies showed her new menswear collection. The models sported gold teeth and enormous medallions with rough looks and an abundance of tattoos. The models, dressed as "rough, stylish and hardened" Roma, were part of Ms Westwood's show's theme of "tolerance".
"Westwood has a romantic notion about Gypsies that is 100 years out of date," said Tiziana Maiolo, Milan's assessor for industry and fashion and a former Forza Italia MP.
I would like to say that it didnt surprise me.If we think about Vivienne Westwood, we should be ready for anything coming next.Because she is crazy. I like her style and approach in fashion.
